Son of Abu Talib and Fatima bint Asad, Hazrat Ali R.A. (Arabic: علي ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib) lived from approximately 600 to 661 CE. He was also referred to as Al-Hussein. Shia Muslims hold him in high regard as an Imam and Caliph, and he founded a state that was exclusively Islamic in Medina, which is now Saudi Arabia.
Through his daughter Fatima Zahra, who wed Ali’s father Abu Talib, he was descended from Muhammad. He was the first man to be called a “Imam,” which means leader or mentor.
